THE DELAWARE CITY SCHOOL DISTRICT AND BRIDGED CREATE A TEACHER EXTERNSHIP DAY FOR DELAWARE HAYES HIGH SCHOOL TEACHERS
DELAWARE COUNTY, OH – October 23, 2023 – The Delaware City School District, in partnership with BridgED, built a teacher externship day where nearly 90 Delaware Hays High School teachers attended one or two experiences with seven employers across five different industry sectors.
On October 20, the district dedicated half of its teacher professional development day to give teachers experiences designed to build career awareness and showcase the workforce opportunities of today and the future. BridgED, a company dedicated to “bridging the gap” between employers and K12 was hired to create 10 strategic corporate partnerships with the district. One tactic the company is deploying is teacher externship experiences. Teachers are on the front lines with students, are influential, and therefore able to make a positive impact on our economy.
BridgED works as an intermediary on behalf of K12 districts and has forged relationships with the seven companies who participated in the experience which included, PPG Industries, Sarah Moore, Elford Construction, Performance Columbus, Ohio Health, Worthington Industries, and Emergency Plumbing. “BridgED’s partnership with Delaware Schools is focused on career awareness, understanding, and work-based learning opportunities for teachers, parents, and students,” said Christy Bertolo, Co-Founder of the company. “Programming like the teacher externship experience is designed to show teachers the multitude of opportunities available in today’s economy and showcase the many on and off ramps within careers and continuing education and tuition reimbursement opportunities available to this generation of students,” she added.
Delaware City School District Superintendent, Heidi Kegley, feels strongly in the role of schools in economic development. “These externships were an incredible opportunity for our staff to see and experience the workforce opportunities our students have access to in the greater Delaware community. Each experience provided a unique opportunity and highlighted various opportunities and skill sets needed to succeed. This experience will provide ongoing opportunities for staff to engage in conversations with students to help them discover career options and career pathways now and in the future,” said Kegley.
Workforce development is a cornerstone of Governor Mike DeWine’s administration and objectives. The Office of Workforce Transformation’s mission is to connect Ohio’s business, training, and education communities to build a dynamically skilled, productive, and purposeful workforce. “When schools and businesses in a community work together, everyone wins,” said Lt. Governor Jon Husted who leads the Office of Workforce Transformation. “Teachers learn about the variety of career opportunities they can prepare students for in their own communities and area businesses are more likely to stay and grow there because they can find the talent they need to succeed.”
Due to the success of this year’s program, there are plans to expand in 2024.
